Disc Jockeys
Give
Hits First Push
Most Top Popular Tunes Get
Start in Eastern U.S. Cities
By JACK
CULLEN
Do you
ever wonder how some melodies make the hit
parade? How they get started--and why?
Most popular music these days
is brought to the public's attention by
disc jockeys.
Most of the big hits get
their start in areas such as New York,
Cleveland or Chicago -- very few are
started by west coast DJs.
FIVE FIGURES
Most of these key disc
jockeys are in the five-figure bracket,
men like Martin Block, Bill Silbert, Bill
Randall, and, on the west coast, Peter
Potter and Al Jarvis.
In many cases record
manufacturers will pay the disc jockey a
little on the side to get a tune on the
air, although this "payola" is frowned
upon by most jockeys, radio stations
managers and the record people, the habit
still flourishes in the big centres.
In the United States most
disc jockeys receive free copies of most
records as they are released. In
Canada the discs are shipped directly to
the radio station to be catalogued into
the station's own library.
FREE SAMPLES
Local radio stations receive
free samples of all single records on 45
RPM but must subscribe to an album service
which works out to a little less than a
dollar per LP.
The average Vancouver radio
station receives more than 200 releases
every month and will probably program
about a quarter of them.

NAMES IN NEWS
Presley Weeps at
Death of Starlet
Rock 'n roll singer Elvis Presley cried
unashamedly today when told the girl who
played opposite him in his latest film
had been killed in a car accident.
Cut in half in a two-car
crash in Wyoming was actress Judy Tyler,
24, who took the lead in the just-filmed
Jailhouse Rock.
"I just don't believe I can
stand to see that movie now, just don't
believe I can," the former truck driver
sobbed.
