Rock and Roll
Here to Stay

HOLLYWOOD (AP) -- A vice-president of RCA Victor records predicts that rock 'n' roll "will monopolize the record market for at least five more years."
  W. W. Bullock told reporters that rock 'n' roller Elvis Presley "is the largest single factor" in the recording industry's growth.  He said the industry did $400,000,000 worth of business in 1957.  Some 20,000,000 Presley records were sold.

NEW ALBUMS
Long Play Records Popular

By RED ROBINSON

(Vancouver Sun Jan. 24, 1958)

Since Columbia records first introduced the microgroove long playing record a few years ago the market has tripled.
LPs are the biggest sales item of all record companies in the States.
Most radio stations today feature many hours of LP music that was used before by playing single releases.
The music on albums is better . . . the sound is outstanding.
EXOTICA, VOLUME TWO, Martin Denny, Liberty Records--Denny recently played to standing-room-only crowds at Henry J. Kalser's Hawaiian Village.
SATCHMO THE GREAT, Louis Armstrong and Edward R. Murrow, Columbia--Listen to the Satchmo story here and I think you'll find out what jazz means to many people.
JOHNNY CASH, Johnny Cash, Sun Records--One of the all-time great exponents of country music.  He supplies a mixture of pop favorites with the country flavor.
SING BOY SING, Tommy Sands, Capitol Records--Tommy proves he can sing--he sings some ballads and also some rock.
THE EVERLY BROTHERS, Don and Phil Everly, Cadence Records--The boys sing some rock songs with harmony throughout.  This album I predict will be on the top 10 best selling list in a few weeks.
THE CHIRPING CRICKETS, Buddy Holly and the Crickets, Brunswick--A blend of ballads and bounce.  These made their start in show business in Vancouver through a record hit that started here, "That'll Be The Day."
SUPERSONIC GUITARS IN HI-FI, Billy Mure's Guitars, RCA Victor--Hi Fi addicts will run to the record stores for this one.

Johnny Cash First
Big Hit of 1958

By RED ROBINSON

(Vancouver Sun Jan. 24, 1958)
The first big single record for 1958 is here.  It's Johnny Cash's version of "The Ballad of a Teen-age Queen."
This song has broken loose on the music scene so fast that it's almost unbelievable.
In one day it was No. 1 in Memphis, in one week it was No. 1 in Detroit and in two days it has become one of the best-selling songs in the Vancouver area.

WON FIRST ROUND
Johnny Cash is a country singer who tossed his guitar over his shoulder a year ago and walked in the pop record ring.  He won the first round by socking country hits onto the popular charts.
His first big popular side was "Walk the Line."  This was a million seller in the pop field and a million seller in the country field.
Johnny is 23 years old and is considered to be one of the greatest contributors to country music since Hank Williams.  Both men have that art of being able to present a tune that sticks with you.
Much like Williams, Cash writes for his country fans with the hope that everybody everywhere will understand what he is trying to say.
"The Ballad of a Teenage Queen" is one of the biggest record hits in years.  It may become one of the biggest sellers for 1958.

PATTI ON TOP
A long term contract was signed last week with the president of Mercury Records and Jack Fael, Patti Page's personal manager - husband.  Patti started with Mercury ten years ago.
One of her first big hit songs was "The Tennessee Waltz" which was a way over the two million mark in sales.  Since "that" time Patti has sold literally millions and millions of records for Mercury.  She has many gold records on her mantel at home and in a year that saw predominantly male singers on the music charts Patti ended up being the top gal of the year on all polls.
