Rodgers, Mathis
Top Newcomers

BY RED ROBINSON
Vancouver Sun: Feb. 14/58
Music-makers produce scores of records each year that never reach the air.
They're smashed in a screening process that goes on in every radio station in America.
Though some critics say teenagers who make and break music trends have no sense of quality, they won't tolerate trash.
That's why the elimination goes on, mainly of poor music by small recording firms trying to capitalize on a trend.
And this is leading to a new phase in music.  Recording artists are trying new sounds and new ideas.
Good rock is still accepted, but the poor quality discs are being left on record shelves everywhere.
Jimmy Rodgers and Johnny Mathis are two who are certainly moving along with the current musical demand.
Rodgers, particularly, fits in well.  He experimented with folk music, and it paid off.
This week he received his second gold record and it looks like the third is on its way.
Mathis and Nelson Riddle are getting together shortly for some singles and an album.
