Country Music
On the Upswing

BY RED ROBINSON
Vancouver Sun: Feb. 21/58
The trend towards country and western music is on the upswing.
The influence of Elvis Presley, Sonny James, Marty Robbins and others has caused this trend.
Just recently the country king himself, Hank Snow, recorded a song called "Whispering Rain."  The song is new and different.
The first day I played this record I asked the listeners in call in with their opinions and the opinions came out 50-50 for the disc.
This is the first time, however, that a definite country song ever made a bid.
Singers like the Everly Brothers, Ferlin Husky, Faron Young, Webb Pierce, Johnny Horton and Jim Reeves never before shared the pop spotlight as they do today.
It will be interesting to see whether or not the country caravan will get as far as the pop charts.

Music takes you everywhere.  The Dixie music out today takes you to New Orleans, the Jazz to New York and Chicago, country music takes you to Nashville and more emphasis is being stressed these days on world music.
Frank Sinatra's best-selling album, "Come Fly With Me," stresses music around the world, with stops in Mandalay and on the Idle of Capri.
I think it points out how the world is shrinking.
Music always fits the times.  When there's a depression there's usually blues; when there's good times the music is loud and cheerful.

Mike Todd's academy-award-winning movie, Around the World in Eight Days, also made everyone conscious of the world and not just and one segment of it.
That album from the motion picture, by the way, is still on the top-selling list across the nation.
Let's take a look at today's hits and notice where they take you.
This new hit song called "Tequila" with The Champs takes you to Mexico.  The song "26 Miles" takes you to California's Catalina Island.
The "Yellow Dog Blues" takes you to New Orleans.
These are but a few examples of a new trend you might call travelling tunes.
