Mathis Serenade
Headed for Top

By RED ROBINSON
(Vancouver Sun June 20, 1958)
Johnny Mathis, San Francisco's second earthquake, speaking musically, of course, is back again with a sweet serenade that is bound for the top of today's tabulation.
The song is from a Twentieth Century Fox production called "A Certain Smile" in which Johnny stars as a night club singer.  The title of the song is the same as the title of the movie.
This is not Johnny's first performance on the screen.  He was first introduced to the public in a show called "Lizzie" in which he introduced "It's Not for Me to Say," one of his biggest million sellers.
While I was in Los Angeles Peter Potter and his juke box jury rated this as the spotlight song of the week.  I think that you'll agree after hearing this song that it is one of the nicest ballads of the day.
Johnny is in great demand everywhere he goes in the U.S.  With his records and movies being so successful he could well become one of the all-time greats following in the footsteps of Nat King Cole.

While I was in Los Angeles I learned from the music publishers and song writers that novelty songs and rock tunes are still in great demand by the buying public,  Success of Sheb Wooley's "Purple People Eater' and David Seville's "Witch Doctor" are proof of the trend.
Seville, by the way, is back with a follow to "Witch Doctor" called "Bird On My Head."  If this song also climbs to the top of the survey you can expect many more novelty type songs released by the major record companies.
Frank Gallop, announcer on the Perry Como show, has hopped on the bandwagon with a novelty tune of ABC Paramount called "Got a Match".  This song could light the way to further novelty hits.

Got a Match?
- Frank Gallop

A new trend that's sweeping England has spread to North America and American bandstand maestro Johnny Otis has recorded a hand jive tune that's taking off like wild fire.
Hand jive basically is rock music with hand movements to accompany the music.  In other words, instead of using your feet to express the rhythm of the music you make hand motions much like the Hawaiians do.  If you think you've got rocking hands you'll dig hand jive.
