Getting Play Now
End of Rock, Roll Forecast;
Experts Give It 2 More Years

By RED ROBINSON
(Vancouver Sun Sept. 19 1958)

   Is the end of the rock and roll era in sight?
  Today's hit parade has these songs in the spotlight: "Volare" . . . "It's All in the Game" . . . "Patricia" . . . "Everybody Love a Lover" . . . Devoted To You" . . . "Tea For Two Cha Cha" . . . "Born Too Late" . . . and "Near You."
   These are definitely not rock songs.  They are taking positions on today's hit parade.
   The question the record companies are asking is, will Elvis going overseas affect the music industry to the extent of eliminating rock and roll?
   The big record companies don't seem to think so.  They have geared the mechanism of the industry to produce rock and roll for at least another two years.
   Even today's ballads are flavored with the rock beat in the background.  For every slow song on the hit parade there are still three rock or race songs.
 "Bird Dog," "Stupid Cupid," "Summertime Blues," and "Rockin' Robin," are just a few of the top rock song sellers.
   Because there are more artists, more labels and more records released every week, the hit parade is a better variety survey than it has been in five years.
   I don't think rock and roll is on the way out, but it's making way for folk songs, ballads and band numbers.  This trend will satisfy a variety of musical likes.

* * * * *
   The number four song on the survey this week is a hit by a so-called newcomer Tommy Edwards.
   The song "It's All in the Game" was first recorded in 1951.  At that time too many individuals said Edwards sounded like Nat King Cole.
   Recently MGM gave the song a new treatment and added a bigger sound.
   The result: success and a gold record for Tommy Edwards.
