RED'S RECORD RACK
Nat Still King
By RED ROBINSON
(Vancouver Sun Dec. 5, 1958)
"Nature Boy" was the beginning of his singing career. His latest hit is "Non Dimenticar." The hits between are countless and among the most popular with most people through the years.
The singer is none other than Nat King Cole.
Nat started his show business career with a jazz trio and then he decided to sing. From there the rest is musical history.
Nat will go down in the books as one of the all-time big money-makers. His appeal is widespread throughout the world.
His TV show was one of the first all-Negro TV shows in history and his success as an actor in the movies is outstanding. But after talking to Nat it is discovered that his basic love is for music and he says he will always maintain his musical interpretations.
Nat is a man of his own mind and likes the sentimental type of song best because, as he says, it's real music transmitted from one heart to another.
One of Nat's greatest releases was a Christmas song on Capitol Records written by Mel Torme called "The Christmas Song."
Even though sales of this song didn't even half match those of Bing Crosby's perennial favorite "White Christmas," the warmth expressed through Nat's voice makes it an unforgettable tune. The record has been re-released year after year and if you haven't heard it, ask for it when you buy your seasonal serenades.
Two young Vancouver entertainers are being heard across Canada this week with their first diskings. The singers are Gerry Fiander and Jimmy Morrison on the new London subsidiary Arctic Records.
This is a new Canadian label which intends to experiment with new Canadian talent.
These two boys were recently featured on the Red Feather telethon show and were outstanding with their musical offerings.
The songs are "Ready to Rock" and "So Long, Goodbye."
Mr. Controversy Elvis Presley is back in the news again with a few radio stations again insisting that his Christmas songs should not be played on the air.
Here in Vancouver where, [like] other part[s] of Canada, the public doesn't seem to think the album is bad.
