*   *   *
   To take a long look at the whole situation, it's amazing that young Conway Twitty, whose real name is Harold Jenkins made it to the top as the most promising male vocalist when all he had this year was one song.  This one song "It's Only Make Believe" sold well over 2,000,000 records.
  It's amazing because the runnersup like Frankie Avalon, Jack Scott and Bobby Darin had many million sellers.  But only Twitty sold 2,000,000 copies of one record.
   It was such a sensational hit song that the DJs, music operators and record distributors, felt that his potential is unlimited.
   For Elvis Presley this was the third year in a row that he topped his competition.  But with more than 5,000,000 sellers this year how could he miss.
  Connie Francis, "Miss Success," had 3,000,000 sellers this year, and in a year where most of the top sellers were males this is an outstanding contribution.
  The Everly Brothers voted the top vocal group of 1958 not only had two of the top songs of the year, but were also voted top country vocal group of the year.  Their future is guaranteed as this is the second year they have scored so heavily.
  That's this year's annual poll.  A quick review of the top entertainers on wax for the past 12 months.
   Some of these artists will vanish but some of the songs will be remembered for years to come.
