Tommy Edwards
Wins Over Critics
His "It's All in the Game" Chosen No. 2 Song of the Year
By RED ROBINSON
(Vancouver Sun Dec. 19, 1958)
"A singer with a voice like that of Nat King Cole will never sell."
That's what they told Tommy Edwards back in the early fifties when he first recorded "It's All in the Game." It took almost seven years for Tommy to prove that he wasn't copying Nat King Cole.
It's All in the Game" was voted the No. 2 song of the year. Second in sales and appeal to "Volare" with Dominico Modugno.
Tommy's current album named after his record smash is one of the best-selling records of the year. His latest release "Love is All We Need", is topping polls from Cleveland to Kitimat.
Tommy Edwards
"It's All In the Game"
1958 version
1951 Original Version
Many music experts feel that rock an' roll has lost it's impact. It has leaned toward the traditionally pop market and their theory is that it has thus lost its appeal to teenagers. The southern artists who first brought rock an' roll with a realistic blues flavor to the teen-agers and the general public are once more attaining top popularity with all groups.
Rock an' roll is far from dead but its seems that the teen-agers rule the kingdom of records and in the disc world they insist on the real McCoy and not a watered down rock ballad.
* * * Elvis' fans have presented him with a gift of the No. 1 spot. "One Night" is the first Presley pressing to reach the top in more than a year. Last time was Nov. 23. 1957 with "Jailhouse Rock."
