'Evening Rain' Top In Coming Tunes
Novelty Records Hold Promise Of Success in Current Year
By RED ROBINSON
(Vancouver Sun, January 9, 1959)Well, the New Year is here and the wheel of music is spinning out some fine new tunes and trends for the next 52 weeks.
Now is a good time to make some hit predictions for future popularity. These are tune predictions as well as artist predictions.
Surveying the music scene as it exists today and trying to anticipate what the future offers is almost an impossible situation. To forecast the weather is hard enough but when you enter the field of music, forecasting is tougher.
ACCURATE SYSTEM
Who can say what the public will be buying during the next 12 moons?
The most accurate way to predict, is to examine music that has gone by, that which exists today and what is being produced for release.
Here are some predictions for 1959's music:
1 -- "Evening Rain," Earl Grant.
2 -- "Wind and Rain In Your Hair", Pat Boone.
5 -- "Let's Love," Johnny Mathis.
6 -- "Billy Bayou," Jim Reeves.
7 -- "Trust in Me," Patti Page.
8 -- "Yellow Bird," Mills Brothers.
9 -- "Girl on Page 44," Four Lads
10 -- "All American Boy," Bill Parsons.
"Ambrose" (Linda Laurie) could prove that 1959 will be an even bigger year for novelty songs than 1958 with its "Witchdoctor," "Purple People Eater," "Delicious" and "The Chipmunk Song." The latter was the biggest novelty hit in the history of the recording business.
Outstanding artists for 1959:
Vocal Groups -- Kingston Trio.
Male Vocalists -- Bill Parsons, Earl Grant, Jack Scott, Fabian, Frankie Avalon.
Female Vocalists -- Connie Francis, Dodie Stevens, Eileen Rodgers.
Studio Bands and Rock Bands -- Duane Eddy, Ray Coniff.
Looking at the overall picture we see that 1959 started out favoring novelty songs. Here are some of the top new novelty numbers: "Little Space Girl," "Ambrose," "Chipmunk Song," "All American Boy" and "Pink Shoe Laces." The latter is a swinging novelty thing that spreads out its wings and takes off.
FUTURE QUEEN
The young artist, Dodie Stevens, is only 12 years old and has a very adult approach to the music scene. She could [be one of the rising newcomers in the Vancouver area.
Its popularity with teenagers is unquestionable and its a good bet that this young gal from Los Angeles will sail to the top with her first release.
These are some advance glances at things to come your way on discs during this year of 1959. You will notice a trend towards slower tunes and ballads but R&R still is predominant throughout the hit parade. The motto for 1959 in music is divine for 1959.
